Formed early in 2007 as the house band at Studio 89 (Adelaide, Australia), the chemistry within the band was immediately apparent, as was the potential. The ensuing collaboration between songstress Lauren Henderson and composer pianist Evan Whetter steered the band deeper into the direction of their lyrical modern sound.

The energy and excitement with which Henderson delivers her sublime vocals is perfectly balanced and supported by the rhythm section of Whetter, Shireen Khemlani (bass) and Yohan Lee (drums), whose collective experience spans the nation. Individually some of Adelaide’s most in-demand musicians, recording and touring with some of Australia’s best known acts such as The Hill Top Hoods, Sukatash, Marmalade Circus, James Morrison and more.

National recognition came with the success of their season at the 2008 Adelaide Fringe Festival, and was quickly backed up by a long running residency at Adelaide’s Hyatt Regency where the band was able to further develop their original, popular and standard repertoire.

Debut release due early 2009, their unique sound places The Urban Jazz Quartet at the vanguard of the contemporary jazz scene. Fresh, hip & relevant.
